Best Web Hosting in South Africa (2026): four SA hosts compared in rand

Hosting is the one purchase where the renewal price matters more than the promo price. We priced four South African hosts on their own sites, showed first-year and renewal costs, and flagged the one plan whose billing terms we couldn't pin down.

Affiliate disclosure: AlphaTechs is reader-supported. If you buy through some links on this page we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. We only list products we have verified ourselves, we publish the date we checked every price, and commission never changes a recommendation — the "who should NOT buy" sections exist for that reason.

1. What actually matters when buying SA hosting

For a South African small business site, portfolio, blog or online store on a budget, only five things change your outcome:

  • Renewal price. A "R20/month" plan that renews at R150 costs you more than an honest R79/month plan. We publish both.
  • Storage type. NVMe is meaningfully faster than SATA SSD for the same price.
  • Refund window. 30 days lets you actually test; 10 days barely does.
  • Free .co.za domain on annual plans — saves ~R100+/year on its own.
  • Where support sits. All four hosts here are South African operations with local support hours — for billing disputes and EFT payments, that matters.

If you need more than ~50 GB, thousands of visitors a day, or guaranteed resources, shared hosting is the wrong product — see section 5 rather than buying a bigger shared plan.

2. Comparison table — real ZAR prices

Read from each host's own pricing page on 7 October 2026. Where a host's billing wording was ambiguous, we say so instead of guessing.

Host · plan Advertised price Renewal / ongoing Storage Refund Notes
Hostking · Launch R39.50/mo promo (R474 first year, billed annually) R79/mo 50 GB NVMe 30 days Free .co.za domain (annual), free SSL, daily backups, 1 site, 25 email
telaHosting · Starter cPanel R20/mo shown Card says "Billed at Annually" — cycle unclear 10 GB NVMe 10 days Cheapest entry; free domain with annual; JetBackup
HostAfrica · Basic R139/mo R139/mo — monthly contract, cancel anytime 40 GB SSD 30 days Free .co.za domain, free SSL, 5 sites, 100 email, DirectAdmin
1-grid · Medium R139/mo (annual saves up to 10%) R139/mo 25 GB SSD Not stated on page 200 websites, Plesk, 1-click WordPress, free .co.za, unlimited mail

Cheaper sibling plans exist on every host (Hostking Starter R74/mo and Premium R149/mo; HostAfrica Starter R99/mo, Power R245/mo, Business R360/mo; 1-grid Small R99/mo, Large R269/mo; telaHosting Elite R40/mo, Elite Pro R80/mo, Premium R160/mo) — we list the plan we'd actually recommend at each host, not the cheapest headline.

3. The four picks — pros, cons, who each is for

1. Hostking Launch — best all-round first site (R39.50/mo)

Check price ↗

R474 first year (billed annually) · renews R79/mo · 50 GB NVMe · free .co.za domain · 30-day money-back

Pros

  • 50 GB NVMe is generous at this price — most starters use under 5 GB
  • Renewal price published up front (R79/mo), so no bill shock
  • 30-day money-back + free .co.za domain on annual plans
  • Daily backups and free SSL on every plan

Cons

  • Annual billing required for the promo price and the free domain
  • 1 website only on Launch — multi-site owners need Starter (R74/mo)
  • Shared resources: not for high-traffic stores

Who should buy: first website, small business brochure site, blog, or anyone moving off a free/patchy host.

Who should not: agencies hosting 20 client sites (go reseller or 1-grid), or stores doing real volume.

2. HostAfrica Basic — best month-to-month flexibility (R139/mo)

Check price ↗

R139/mo · monthly contract, cancel anytime · 40 GB SSD · free .co.za · 30-day money-back

Pros

  • No annual lock-in — pay monthly, leave monthly
  • 5 websites and 100 email accounts on Basic
  • Free daily backups and Let's Encrypt SSL

Cons

  • R139/mo vs Hostking's R474 first year — ~3× the year-one cost
  • SSD rather than NVMe on the published plans
  • No annual-discount price shown on the page we checked

Who should buy: test projects, seasonal businesses, or anyone who refuses annual commitments.

Who should not: budget buyers — Hostking is cheaper in year one with more storage.

3. 1-grid Medium — best for multi-site owners (R139/mo)

Check price ↗

R139/mo · up to 10% off annual · 200 websites · 25 GB SSD · Plesk panel · free .co.za

Pros

  • 200 websites on one plan — unmatched for freelancers/agencies
  • Plesk panel (industry standard for multi-site management)
  • Established SA brand with local support

Cons

  • Only 25 GB SSD for 200 sites — storage is the constraint
  • No refund window published on the pricing page we checked
  • Same price as HostAfrica with half the storage

Who should buy: developers and agencies managing many small client sites.

Who should not: a single-site owner — you're paying for 199 sites you won't use.

4. telaHosting Starter — cheapest entry, with a caveat (R20/mo)

Check price ↗

R20/mo shown · 10 GB NVMe · 1 site · free SSL & backups · 10-day money-back

Pros

  • Lowest published entry price of the four
  • NVMe storage and free SSL even on the cheapest plan
  • Also offers managed WordPress plans from R20/mo

Cons

  • The billing cycle on the card is contradictory ("Starting at Monthly" + "/Monthly" + "Billed at Annually") — we could not verify what you actually pay
  • Only a 10-day money-back window — shortest here
  • 10 GB and 1 site on the entry plan

Who should buy: the smallest possible first project — after you confirm the billing cycle at checkout.

Who should not: anyone who values a published, unambiguous price — Hostking's terms are clearer at a comparable cost.

4. Who should NOT buy shared hosting

  • Running a store with real order volume. Shared resources mean a traffic spike on a neighbour's site slows yours. You want VPS or managed WooCommerce hosting — a different purchase entirely.
  • Hosting client sites professionally. Shared plans don't give you isolation, staging and per-site backups. Reseller or VPS hosting is cheaper in the long run than stacking shared plans.
  • Needing guaranteed uptime for revenue. If an hour of downtime costs you money, buy SLA-backed hosting and monitoring — a R20/month plan won't carry that promise.
  • Only wanting a link in your bio. A Google Business Profile, social profile or free one-pager may solve it at zero cost. Don't buy hosting for a site you haven't planned yet.

5. Alternatives to SA shared hosting

OptionWhere it winsWhere it losesOur take
South African cloud VPS Root access, dedicated resources, scales You manage security, updates and backups Right once shared hosting hurts
Website builders (WordPress.com, Wix-type) Zero technical setup, hosting included Monthly fees stack; export/lock-in Fine for a pure brochure site
International hosts (US/EU based) Feature-rich, often cheaper promos Dollar/Euro billing, slower TTFB for SA visitors, offshore data Not verified yet — we don't recommend what we haven't priced
GitHub Pages / Netlify-type static hosting Free for static sites and portfolios No email, no databases, no dynamic backend Genuinely free if your site is static

We have not yet verified international hosting programmes that legitimately accept South African customers with rand pricing — that research is on our backlog, and we won't publish prices we haven't checked.

6. FAQ

Is cheap South African hosting actually reliable?

For a brochure site, blog or small business site with modest traffic, yes — the four hosts above all publish uptime commitments and local support. Cheap shared hosting becomes unreliable when you put a busy store or heavy application on it, not because the plan is inexpensive.

Should I pay monthly or annually?

Annually if you're committed: every host here discounts annual billing (Hostking's promo price is annual-only, and it includes the free .co.za domain). Monthly if you're testing — HostAfrica is the only one of the four that makes month-to-month painless. Always check the renewal price, not just the promo.

Do I need hosting if I only use WhatsApp and Instagram?

No. If your customers find and contact you on social platforms, a website is optional — and a Google Business Profile is free. Buy hosting when you need a link you own, an email at your own domain, or search traffic.

Can I migrate an existing site?

All four hosts offer migration help of some kind; the practical check before paying is whether they migrate for free and whether your current host charges an exit fee. Ask both questions before you buy — we list each host's published terms, and migration deals change.
